Here are some photos of the spring "freshet" on the Androscoggin River at the Brunswick-Topsham bridge. Since the rain stopped almost a week ago, the water must be mostly snowmelt. We have a small hydropower station. They open the gates when there's too much water.
Here's a shot of most of the dam.
Looking towards the old mill, which is now redeveloped as mixed-use: offices, shops, restaurants, storage, even some light manufacturing. There's a restaurant in the little building to the left nearest the river. The building to the right is the hydropower plant.
I took these last two shots while leaning over the rail. Between the roar and the rapid movement of the water, it felt like I was being sucked down towards it.
Howe Brook runs through the valley between Center Ridge and North Traveler and into the South Branch Ponds in the northern part of Baxter State Park. A set of cascades and falls, it runs alongside a trail for about a mile. Another great easy hike with plenty of water.
Late September, as you can see from the trees. The air was warm, but the water was COLD!
Katahdin Stream runs along the Hunt Trail, up the southwest side of Katahdin. The falls is about an hour up the trail & worth the walk even if you go no further. This photo was taken in September. I'd like to be there sometime in the spring when the water is high. The section of the falls visible in this photo is about 40 feet high. It goes down at least as far again from the bottom of the photo.
