A recent sunset in Portland's Deering Oaks park, where I was skating with my daughter Anna. I love the way snow turns blue in the evening.
Those things hanging in the trees are holiday decorations by a local sculptor, Pandora LaCasse. They hang throughout the park and the city. Here's a close-up of one group of them. The sun is so low in the sky, twilight starts before 4 pm. Here's last night's sunset - over Maquoit Bay. Low tide, about 4:15 pm.
And here's Crystal Spring Farm, with the recently bred ewes out in the snow. CSF, among other things, is used for breeding sheep from all over the east coast. The ewes are shipped, bred, brought to term, and then returned to their homes. The lambing in the spring is festive and fun. When I see this view at this time of year it reminds me of a photograph in the Bowdoin College Museum of Art of a gas station called "It Must be Winter, the Doors are Down."
Last night's sunset. A few minutes before I shot this the entire sky looked like one of those California wildfires. But I didn't have the camera handy. Then this hole opened up in the clouds and it went from orange to pink. Looks like one of those old religious paintings. All it needs is a hairy old geezer with lightning bolts in his hand.
Here's recent sunset over Maquoit Bay, which is about 4 miles from my home. It's a great place to see the water, shorebirds, etc. You can just barely see a raft of black ducks in the right-center of this photo. There were hundreds of geese off to the right, but they were in the shadow of the shore so I couldn't photograph them. They were honking up a storm.
