These photos were taken Saturday on a trip to Morse Mountain in Phippsburg. A very special place maintained by The Nature Conservancy, Bates College, and the St. John family. It's a 2-mile walk through the woods, across an estuary, and over a hill to a spectacular beach. Here's the view from the top of the hill.
It was cold. This spot overlooks the estuary.A favorite tree, right next to the spot where I took the previous photo.
Finally, the beach.
I love the beach grass this time of year.
November surf, taken a year ago. It wasn't quite so dramatic this time around.
More photos from Popham Beach. This is looking south, out the mouth of the Kennebec River. The three islands are (left to right) Pond, Seguin, and Wood. This was at low tide.
Also at low tide, looking up the beach towards Fort Popham (to the left in the photo) and the river, from Wood Island.
Looking up river. The fishing village of Georgetown is on the right.
Here are some photos of the spring "freshet" on the Androscoggin River at the Brunswick-Topsham bridge. Since the rain stopped almost a week ago, the water must be mostly snowmelt. We have a small hydropower station. They open the gates when there's too much water.
Here's a shot of most of the dam.
Looking towards the old mill, which is now redeveloped as mixed-use: offices, shops, restaurants, storage, even some light manufacturing. There's a restaurant in the little building to the left nearest the river. The building to the right is the hydropower plant.
I took these last two shots while leaning over the rail. Between the roar and the rapid movement of the water, it felt like I was being sucked down towards it.
