The sheep are out. And curious. These photos are from a trip to Crystal Spring Farm (CSF) last Saturday.
CSF is up high, but it's also flat at the top of the hill, so it's a great place for sunsets and moonrises.
Here's a closer look: And here's a later look, from another location. I know these aren't great photos, but what the heck ...Here's a field at Crystal Spring Farm, awaiting plowing. The green rows in the foreground are a cover crop of grass (rye?), planted in the fall to hold the soil and build organic matter when they are turned under in the spring. Last year tomatoes, peppers, and other vegetables grew here.
Crystal Spring is a community supported all-organic enterprise on land owned by the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust. The farmer, Seth, is ill, so I'm not sure what's to happen this season. We all hope for his speedy recovery!
The sun is so low in the sky, twilight starts before 4 pm. Here's last night's sunset - over Maquoit Bay. Low tide, about 4:15 pm.
And here's Crystal Spring Farm, with the recently bred ewes out in the snow. CSF, among other things, is used for breeding sheep from all over the east coast. The ewes are shipped, bred, brought to term, and then returned to their homes. The lambing in the spring is festive and fun. When I see this view at this time of year it reminds me of a photograph in the Bowdoin College Museum of Art of a gas station called "It Must be Winter, the Doors are Down."
